FOUNDATION

PREP - Public

At Milgate, our Foundation Program has been specifically designed to create a smooth transition to formal education, and develop your child’s curiosity and love for learning. It includes a comprehensive English and Mathematics program, play-based curriculum and our unique teaching approach to guide your child to inquire with confidence and enthusiasm.

Our programs offer the very best in academic, social, emotional and physical support for your child to develop the essential learning skills that will be the foundations for their future learning.

Our Foundation teachers are highly trained experts in Early Childhood Education. Our detailed and comprehensive literacy program focuses on phonemic awareness and phonics, which is the very cornerstone of your child’s literacy development, and will give your child the vital skills and knowledge for their future literacy achievements.

Your child will be introduced to mathematics through a combination of hands-on activities and real-life experiences. Students will undertake a variety of rich tasks to consolidate their learning of Number, Measurement, Data collection and presentation.

Our Discovery Time will become a favourite feature of the timetable for your child. These sessions foster children’s interests and curiosity through guided and free exploration of a wide variety of activities in stimulating surrounds. Examples include: reading, mathematics, art, role-playing, fine motor skills, tinkering, music, construction and more. Students’ social and communication skills naturally develop during these interactive sessions and their experiences are integrated into the more traditional aspects of our program.

Milgate is committed to offering the accredited International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP).  It ensures a consistent, school-wide international teaching approach that is inquiry based and encourages all aspects of your child's development (the 'whole child'), in a secure and stimulating environment.  We are the only primary school in Manningham to offer this unique teaching approach.

Developing all aspects of your child is at the centre of all our teaching and learning programs at Milgate.  We look forward to sharing in this journey with you and your child.

LEARNING in Foundation

Term 1

Our Foundation students settle into the routines of primary school life. Their first unit of inquiry  focuses on ‘How we organise ourselves’. The students investigate how communities are formed – through agreed ways of behaving and working. Identifying common attitudes that help us work together – “Care, Share, Try your Best!”

We live the PYP by putting this motto into action. Students care for their peers in the classrooms and playground, share their ideas and resources and give their best in all the new challenges and exciting opportunities that come their way in their first term of formal schooling.

Below are pictures of some of the fun and interesting learning we have undertaken previously:

Term 2

Our students engage in so many fun and exciting learning activities as part of our second PYP unit of inquiry about ‘Who we are’. We focus on how we use our senses to gather information about the world around us, and in turn, use that information to help us learn and keep safe.

We learn about responsible pet ownership (and how to be safe around dogs that we do not know), as well as safety in cars, on roads and as pedestrians through the RACV’s ‘Street Scene’ program.

With the help of many volunteer parents, we have two weeks of water safety education at Aquarena! The students are always very excited to catch the bus each day and put into action some of the safety lessons they learn.

During Education Week, students have the opportunity to share their learning and learning environments with their families. We also invite grandparents and special friends to school to share lunch.

Before the end of term we will have more special visitors come to school to share their work and discuss how they keep people safe in the community as well as opportunities to further explore our senses.

Our next unit of inquiry delves into our Senses. We have visits to our classrooms by special guests to discuss how they work to keep people safe and share some of the things they do to look after our senses. The highlight however, is always our excursion to enhance our classroom learning.

Many Foundation students enjoy our school disco to conclude Term 2.

Term 3

Our students celebrate their first 100 days of primary school with a whole-day party. First, students arrive at school in their pyjamas and eat breakfast together. Then we play party games and have a big lunch.

Another excursion allows our Foundation students to explore - previously we've visited the Heide Museum of Modern Art. Students engaged in an art tour led by trained educators and artists. They were encouraged to be reflective in their observations, be independent thinkers while listening and responding to others. Students were incredibly excited and inspired by the visit and continued their artistic exploration through their next inquiry, How We Express Ourselves.

Students will explore various artistic avenues throughout the term. They may include woodwork, textiles, painting or cake decorating. The Foundation teachers have previously led students to explore their creativity by making puppets, weaving patterns, painting with watercolours and making music.
